The FemFreq team had a great weekend in Seattle at GeekGirlCon 2017, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it! We had a dynamite time getting to talk to long-standing FemFreq supporters, and meeting new folks who wanted to learn more about what we do. On Saturday, we held a panel called “Pop Culture Playback,” to give audience members an inside peek into the development of our new series, The FREQ Show (we even debuted a brand-new episode…subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you know when it’s officially released!). Throughout the weekend, all kind of amazing folks stopped by our table in the exhibit hall to meet Anita, grab some cool FemFreq merchandise, or just to show off their fly cosplay. We loved it, and we can’t wait for GeekGirlCon 2018!

UK Conference Inducts Anita Into European Women in Games Hall of Fame https://feministfrequency.com/2017/09/12/uk-conference-inducts-anita-into-european-women-in-games-hall-of-fame/ https://feministfrequency.com/2017/09/12/uk-conference-inducts-anita-into-european-women-in-games-hall-of-fame/#respond Tue, 12 Sep 2017 20:54:07 +0000 http://feministfrequency.com/?p=43111

Anita delivered the keynote address at the 2017 Women in Games Conference at the East London Arts and Music Academy on September 6th. Women in Games is a non-profit, games industry diversity organization, and their recent conference drew over 40 speakers and panelists to discuss the diverse talent within the games industry.  The conference, which aims “to educate and inspire, and help stimulate future generations,” included a mix of keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, the HR Manager’s Forum, an expo and the European Women in Games Hall of Fame Awards, into which Anita was inducted.

Joining Anita in delivering a keynote address was Brie Code, the writer, AI programmer, and CEO and creative director of Tru Luv Media, a tiny video game studio “making games with people who don’t like games.”

Head over to Facebook to check out tons of great event photos and support organizations like this one who are working to make the gaming industry more inclusive and accessible for all!

Party vs. Video Games: Celebrating Tropes https://feministfrequency.com/2017/08/08/party-vs-video-games-celebrating-tropes/ https://feministfrequency.com/2017/08/08/party-vs-video-games-celebrating-tropes/#respond Tue, 08 Aug 2017 19:16:59 +0000 http://feministfrequency.com/?p=42683 You didn’t think we’d let the wrap of Tropes vs. Women in Video Games pass without a proper celebration, did you?

This past Saturday – five years after Anita launched the Tropes Kickstarter – we hosted folks from the games industry, backers, and many of the other people that helped make Tropes a reality. And, without exaggeration, it was an awesome time!

The theme of the night was old school arcade – which meant making sure our party brought back nostalgic memories of playing video games with friends in your parents’ basement, eating slice after slice of pizza, and listening to the tunes of Madonna and Michael Jackson, Prince and the Clash.

Since not everyone could be there, we’re sharing a little piece of the party, including some photos from the night, our playlist and the videos we streamed on screens throughout the space. Carolyn also played some video games and chatted with guests throughout the night; if you didn’t catch it live Saturday, you can watch the recorded livestream. And finally, what’s a party these days without a photo booth? (Check out some of our favorite shots below.)

So, what now? Feminist Frequency is moving forward, with brand new episodes of our latest series The FREQ Show coming out in the next month. In the meantime, we’ve said it before but we can’t say it enough: thank you. Our two seasons of Tropes vs. Women in Video Games were possible because of the people like you that supported us along the way.

Anita spoke with some great folks in Stockholm at Geek Girl MeetUp on May 13 about gaming, the future of pop culture, and the theme of geek evolution! Geek Girl Meetup is a non-profit organization for geek girls interested in the web, coding, and business development. Its purpose is to create new networks and promote female role models in the industry by having participants gather to share stories and experiences. Follow Geek Girl MeetUp on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for some great photos and recaps of the “un-conference.”

Feminist Frequency Stops in Seattle https://feministfrequency.com/2017/04/26/feminist-frequency-stops-in-seattle/ https://feministfrequency.com/2017/04/26/feminist-frequency-stops-in-seattle/#respond Wed, 26 Apr 2017 18:09:46 +0000 http://feministfrequency.com/?p=41406 This week, we got to spend time with fans, talking feminism and playing with lasers – is there anything better?

On Monday night, Glowforge generously hosted Feminist Frequency at their Seattle offices to meet with our existing and new supporters in the area. Attendees got to try out the Glowforge 3D laser printer and create uniquely crafted wooden puzzles, luggage tags and name badges in a matter of minutes. Anita also said a few words about FemFreq’s ongoing work and newest project, a video series that we’ll start releasing next week.

The evening was a resounding good time and a great opportunity to share in delicious food and drink, and excitement for FemFreq’s upcoming show. Be on the lookout for more details and the new videos in May!

Another GDC has come and gone, but you still have an opportunity to listen in on the thought-provoking discussions happening in the games industry from some of its most socially-engaged leaders. The GDC Vault is a fantastic way to catch up on many of the great panels, talks, and presentations from past events.

Anita delivered an entertaining and informative call for inclusion (with some great cat gifs!) to a packed convention hall during the “Advocacy Microtalks,” but hers was not the only compelling speech of the day. Speakers like Dina Abou Karam, TL Taylor, and Imre Jele offered everything from “thoughtful and fresh perspectives on design, to working with marginalized groups, to sharing practical steps for doing more inclusive work.”

Last Thursday evening, Feminist Frequency was in Chicago to introduce folks to our work, spend time with supporters, and talk about what we’re gearing up for in the next few months.

Hosted by our friends at Cards Against Humanity, attendees were treated to delicious food and drinks, and hilarious comedy – which provided a little welcomed levity amidst all of the news we’ve been hearing these past few days.

The event was an overwhelming success – we raised both visibility and funds from some incredibly generous people to help us continue our work. A huge thank you to everyone who attended!

Check out more pictures from the event here.

Defying Hate Speech and Threats Against Female Journalists https://feministfrequency.com/2016/12/06/defying-hate-speech-and-threats-against-female-journalists/ https://feministfrequency.com/2016/12/06/defying-hate-speech-and-threats-against-female-journalists/#respond Tue, 06 Dec 2016 16:03:49 +0000 http://feministfrequency.com/?p=40012

On December 2, Sweden celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Freedom of the Press Act, which was the first of its kind in the world. To mark the occasion, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Fojo Media Institute/Linnæus University, the Swedish Institute and the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO gathered a powerful group of female journalists together to share stories about preserving journalistic freedom in the face of harassment, hate speech, and threats.

Anita joined a select group of influential journalists and writers to offer her personal perspective on what it means to be a visible and vocal advocate for feminist issues while facing threats and character assassination from online attackers.

You can help ensure that progressive voices are not drowned out by hate and intimidation. Donate today to support Feminist Frequency’s mission to contribute to a just and equitable media landscape.

I was invited to give a keynote presentation at The Media Evolution Conference in Malmö, Sweden, where I detailed some of the subtle ways in which women’s accomplishments, experience, and expertise are routinely diminished and dismissed in male-dominated spaces. I also discussed ways in which the cultural norms of these spaces can be challenged and changed to make them more equitable for everyone. Watch the presentation at The Conference video archive.
